Fast Track To Understanding What Is BIM?

Ways To Understand What Is BIM?

The current buzzword in the building industry is BIM (Building Information Modeling). The enthusiast has come up with new trends and innovations in this high-tech arena helping to evolve the AEC industry beyond the imagination level.

Let’s have a detailed look at understanding what is Building Information Modeling in the construction sector.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is boosting the Architectural, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry at a very intensifying rate. The enhancements are at the point where the business organizations and even the countries are choosing to decree the platform for the large-scale project

BIM is far from interpretation. It is rather a complex concept that leaves people with a lot of questions like what is BIM. What can it do? How does it work? How is it effective? And the list continues…

Each question has multiple answers which open a chance of misconceptions and honestly this can eventually create a fence for those who want to follow or adopt BIM technology. So, let’s take the initiative to see if we can clear the air on these illusions.

Let’s have detail guidelines on BIM, Get started…

What is BIM?

The most significant question for a layman is what is BIM?

There is the most common misconception that Building Information Modeling means a 3D design of building, in fact, it is galore of ingenious construction trends.

In a simple language, BIM is the process for creating and managing all the information during project life cycle i.e. Designing, pre-construction budgeting, construction execution, and operations.

In a very professional language, BIM is an intelligent 3D model-based process that adorns architecture, engineering and construction professionals with the intuition and tools to manage, plan, design and construct buildings infrastructure to generate noticeable results.

We have shortlisted a couple of videos to help you understand about BIM and its future.

Why opt BIM?

BIM is helping most of the construction companies to operate more productively, outturn high-quality designs, attract more skill-sets and eventually win new business. With the use of BIM technology, it brings the opportunity to try out the permanent solutions in advance, means before the actual construction of a site and that too with an apt constructible project model. With accepting the BIM technology, the parties can understand and review the design in the early stage. Whereas, the necessary changes get done with ease and at the end helps in guarantee the project’s accuracy and completeness and visualize and evaluate the actual cost and the rest project parameters. Building Information Modeling proves to be the more collaborative way and the better likely way to get started the project.

Benefits of Building Information Modeling

1.    Improve Collaboration amongst the team

When we consider BIM, we often think of better coordination and sharing. Sharing and cooperation are a lot easier in BIM than with the traditional drawing sets. As we are already noticing around us, a lot more functions are possible only in the digital workflow like using BIM there has a clear vision on reviews and markups. It ensures that every dedicated team member can express the inputs on the evolution of design and that are ready to execute when the actual concept is concluded and moves forward in the construction phase.

2.    Simulation and visualization

There are numerous numbers of simulation tools that allow engineers or architects to visualize the basic things like the sunlight during the different seasons and energy analysis. BIM is intelligent software that applies rules based on physics and has best practices that furnish a complement for AEC project team members.  BIM can do many analysis and modeling to achieve the highest performance in just one click.

The ‘D’ elements of the BIM describe the information in correlation with the models.

•     4D BIM discloses the scheduling information of the project like when the elements will build. With this information, you can quickly obtain the just-in-time (JIT) delivery of materials to the actual location which eventually impacts on transportation which in turn makes the work more efficient and helps in reducing storage issues as the materials delivers in real-time and installed immediately.

Thus, the better streamlining of various activities are quickly achieving if the schedule and time of the activity are known.

•    The cost estimation and cost aspect of the building is called 5D BIM (Building Information Modeling ). Each and every element within the building model has a specific cost associated with it.  Thus, a detailed analysis regarding the budgets is required. The prices here include purchasing, installing, maintenance and renewal costs. The 5D BIM also allows the delivery team to make accurate prognosis regarding the needs and requirements to be done to accomplish the construction targets.

3.    Clash Detection.

The BIM technology automatically detects the conflicts between trades, which eventually leads to the reduction of on-site issues and cost savings. Also the using BIM you can easily manufacture the required elements off-site rather than creating them on-site.

Post a video on clash detection. We can create this video in-house.

4.    Saves money by reducing Labor cost on rework and increased productivity.

Using BIM, we can quickly build the potential to analyze the errors before construction. This eventually reduces the rework and thus helps in improving the productivity. It is rather costly to correct the site issues such as defective ductwork after the installation, with BIM, users can see, visualize upcoming errors/clashes and fix them before the final installation, thus saving the money, rework and labor cost.

5. Eliminates Duplication

As Building Information Modeling supports sharing, the need for revised and duplication of drawings is almost reducing. The BIM model contains more information than a picture set. The BIM tools are faster than 2D drawing instruments, where each object is in connection to a database. The database assists the quantity takeoffs that are updated automatically as the model progresses.

How can BIM help you?

With the help of BIM, all the information about every component of a building brings together in one place. BIM makes it possible for anyone to access that information for any purpose like aspects of different designs in a more efficient way. In this way, the risk of mistakes is reduced and eventually cost management proves to be beneficial.

Also, BIM data can be used to demonstrate the entire life-cycle of building from cradle to cradle, from inception and design to demolition and material reuse. The different spaces, systems, products, sequences can are seeing in relative scale to each other. BIM also prevents errors popping up at various stages of developments or construction.

What is a BIM object?

A BIM object is a combination of many things:

•    Provides all the information that defines a product.

•    BIM object includes the Geometric Representation of the product’s physical characteristics.

•    Provides visual appearance of data giving the object a recognizable appearance.

•    Provides the functional data, such as detection zone, that enables the object to be positioned and behave in the same manner as the product itself.

BIM is absolutely a must-have tool for engineers, architects, and designers in the scenario. Are You BIM ready?

Let’s see how BIM assists in improving the design of construction project.

    Hello,
BIM or Building Information Modelling is a process for creating and managing information on a construction project by creationg a intelligent 3D model.
You can visualize the atcual building and all the interior and services like plumbing mechanical electrical etc in it. 4D,5D, coordination etc services can be provided by the use of BIM.
